Micah was born May 23th and passed 23 hours later on May 24th, 2008 due to incompatible life issues. He was born with out kidneys for starters. This is called Bilateral Renal Agenesis and is uncommon and is a serious condition. Bilateral Renal Agenesis is the absence of both kidneys at birth. It is a genetic disorder characterized by a failure of the kidneys to develop in a fetus. This absence of kidneys caused a deficiency of amniotic fluid in a pregnant woman. Normally, the amniotic fluid acts as a cushion for the developing fetus. When there is an insufficient amount of this fluid, compression of the fetus may occur resulting in further malformations of the baby. Studies have proven that unilateral renal agenesis and bilateral renal agenesis are genetically related. 1 in 3 infants with this congenital defect are still born. Most infants that are born alive do not live beyond four hours. The odds of a person being born with this condition are roughly 1 in 5000.
The Doctors said Micah possibly had Fryns Syndrome which is an extremely rare inherited disorder characterized by multiple abnormalities that are present at birth (congenital). Characteristic symptoms and physical findings include protrusion of part of the stomach and/or small intestines into the chest cavity (diaphragmatic hernia), abnormalities of the head and face area (craniofacial region), and underdevelopment of the ends of the fingers and toes (distal digit hypoplasia). Fryns syndrome is inherited as an autosomal recessive trait.
How do gene mistakes occur? Gene mutations can be either inherited from a parent or acquired. A hereditary mutation is a mistake that is present in the DNA of virtually all body cells. Hereditary mutations are also called germline mutations because the gene change exists in the reproductive cells (germ cells) and can be passed from generation to generation, from parent to newborn. Moreover, the mutation is copied every time body cells divide. Genes come in pairs, with one copy inherited from each parent.
